Have you ever noticed the difference in volume between brushing your teeth with your mouth open or with your mouth closed? It's pretty fucking big. So what does this tell us, the science community? Flesh is a good audio insulator. This is why they use it in sound studies, and sometimes older theaters.
Older theaters have an advantage in the winter time. The flesh absorbs the audio frequency and emits heat. Of course, this is problematic in the summer time.
